2012 Nissan Versa

2012 Nissan Versa

I’m often asked what car I would buy if I were shopping for a new car. I usually don’t have a specific answer because there are usually several equally appealing cars in a given class of cars. It’s just too close to call – and comes down to subjectives and intangibles. Which one looks better to you – and so on. But if I were in the market for a new economy car, and was looking to get the most car for the least money, the 2012 Nissan Versa 1.6 sedan would be the only car I’d be looking...

2012 Honda CR-V

Relativity – it’s not just a concept in physics. It applies to horsepower (and performance) too. On the one hand, the just-updated 2012 Honda CR-V is still a bit underpowered and a bit slow relative to competitors because it still has nothing mightier than a 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine under its hood (same as last year). But relative to how traffic flows – and how most people drive – the CR-V is (usually) powerful enough and quick enough. It all comes down to your perspective, relatively speaking. Besides, people shop the CR-V for other reasons, too. How’s it stack...

2012 Fiat 500 C

2012 Fiat 500 C

I’ve already reviewed the Fiat 500 coupe (see here). Now it’s time to look at the 500C with the folding soft-top (similar to the one offered by VW on the old Beetle – and Fiat – a long time ago, but now fully electronic and it doesn’t leak, either). I tested what might just be the ultimate version, a Lounge with an automatic transmission, plus removable/portable TomTom GPS, plus two-tone leather, plus heated seats, plus, well – everything. This 500 C Lounge has the kitchen sink plus the soap dish, countertop and anything else nearby, too. Price? Just over...

The 2013 Mazda CX-5 I Won’t Be seeing

I just got invited by Mazda to attend a press event for the 2013 CX-5 in CA. I used to attend such events regularly, and I’d love to attend this one- but am pretty...

Well, She Won… Now We May All Lose

Heather Peters (no relation to this writer) just won her lawsuit against Honda over what she argued were misleading claims about the gas mileage she’d get out of her then-new 2006 Civic hybrid. She...

One For Them… One For Us

In the news today, an example of the two-tiered system of “justice” that exists in America – one for us and one for them: Colorado State Rep. Laura Bradford was pulled over by a...

OBD III: The Motor Law Realized

You know that “check engine” light on your dashboard? What if instead of just telling you that the car’s computer has detected some fault with the emissions control system, it told the government –...

No More Nitro … But, Hello Dart!

No More Nitro … But, Hello Dart!

Chrysler is throwing two of its slow-sellers in the woods – the Dodge Caliber and its over-reachingly named cousin, the Dodge Nitro. Will they be missed? Not by Chrysler. Or Chrysler’s new owner, Fiat – which knows a stinker when it smells one. The Caliber never hit the target and last year was particularly...

How Government Just Made Your Next Car Less Safe

How Government Just Made Your Next Car Less Safe

I recently did a column about the burbling war between the Safety Nazis and the Mileage Mussolinis (see here). Well, here’s the first casualty: Your safety. Because your next new car probably won’t come with even a mini-spare – let alone an actual full-size spare tire. The latter has been MIA from all-but-large-luxury cars...

The Failure of Satellite Radio

The Failure of Satellite Radio

Satellite radio – that is, SirusXM satellite radio – was supposed to be revolutionary, an end-run around the heavily censored, mostly commercials dreck of terrestrial FM and AM radio. Well, they did ok on the first score. Satellite radio is more free and open in the sense that things can be said openly that...

Lincoln’s Future: Is There One?

Lincoln’s Future: Is There One?

Back in the mid-’90s, Lincoln was riding high. Ford’s primo brand was actually outselling GM’s Cadillac division, which at the time was purveyor of stolid starter caskets to the AARP crowd. It was Lincoln that birthed the idea of taking a big SUV from the lower-key Ford line, chroming everything that wasn’t plastic and...
